Why the JPG is bigger than the HEIC
HEIC is a newer, more efficient format, so the same photo takes roughly half the space of a JPG at the same quality. Expect the converted file to be about twice as large — a 287 KB HEIC became a 580 KB JPG in our test. That's normal and the quality is preserved; if size matters, run the JPG through Compress Image.
Stopping your iPhone from making HEIC photos
On an iPhone, go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose "Most Compatible" to save new photos as JPG. Photos you already took stay HEIC — convert those here.
